Ancient architecture

Temples, forums, baths, aqueducts, tombs and the technique behind them — how ancient buildings were made, what survives, and how we know what the rest looked like.

Ancient buildings reach us through four very different kinds of evidence, and popular accounts blend them. The Parthenon stands. The Temple of Zeus at Olympia is a heap of column drums lying where an earthquake dropped them. The Pharos is known from descriptions written centuries after it was built. And the tidy cutaway of a Greek house in a textbook is usually a drawing with no single excavated original behind it.

So every named building on these pages carries an evidence level, and it answers a specific question: how do we know what this looked like? — not whether it existed.

The other recurring correction is about survival. Most ancient building was mudbrick and timber, and almost none of it survives. What survives is stone and fired brick, used for temples, tombs and monuments. Every impression a visitor forms from ruins is skewed toward the exceptional, and the materials page says so directly.

    A house for a god rather than a hall for worshippers — which is why the important architecture is on the outside.

    The forum

    The Roman civic centre — a colonnaded square that began as an open space for business and became an imperial architectural statement.

    The Greek civic square — market, assembly ground, law court and the place where philosophy was practised in public.

    The stoa

    A roofed colonnade open on one side — the most useful building the Greeks invented, and the one that gave Stoicism its name.

    The basilica

    A large roofed hall for business and law, and the Roman building type that Christianity later took over wholesale.

    The theatre

    Built into a hillside in Greece and free-standing on vaults in Rome — a structural difference that changed where a theatre could be put.

    The amphitheatre

    A Roman invention with no Greek precedent — an oval arena enclosed by seating, built for a form of spectacle the Greek world did not have.

    Baths

    Heated floors, vaulted halls and a daily social institution — the Roman building type that most depended on engineering.

Water and movement

    The aqueduct

    Mostly underground, occasionally spectacular, and dependent on holding a gradient of a fraction of a degree across tens of kilometres.

    The bridge

    The arch applied to a river — and the structure whose survival rate tells you most about Roman construction.

    The harbour

    Building in the sea — and the concrete that could set underwater, which is the technology that made artificial harbours possible.

    The lighthouse

    A building type known almost entirely from description — the Pharos survived a millennium and a half and left almost nothing to excavate on land.

    The house and the apartment block

    The atrium house that everyone pictures was a minority dwelling — most urban Romans lived in flats above shops.

    The triumphal arch

    A free-standing gateway that leads nowhere — architecture whose entire function is to carry an inscription and a set of reliefs.

    The honorific column

    A column carrying a statue, and in two Roman cases a continuous carved narrative that is our fullest pictorial source for the army on campaign.

    Doric, Ionic and Corinthian — a system of proportion and ornament that Vitruvius codified and Europe then treated as law for two thousand years.

    Roman concrete

    The material that let Rome roof spaces no post-and-lintel building could, and that sets underwater — with a self-healing mechanism only recently proposed.

    The structural difference between Greek and Roman architecture in one sentence: the Greeks spanned with beams and the Romans spanned with arches.

Evidence level: Documented
Supported by a named primary text or by excavated material evidence.
Evidence level: Probable
Supported by strong inference that most specialists accept.
Evidence level: Disputed
Substantial specialist disagreement exists; competing readings are stated.
Evidence level: Literary
Belongs to poetic or mythological construction rather than to history.
Evidence level: Mythological
Belongs to shared religious or mythic tradition rather than to any single text.
Evidence level: Unknown
The available evidence is insufficient to decide.

These labels describe the status of the evidence, not our confidence in a conclusion. A claim marked Literary is not a claim we doubt; it is a claim about what kind of thing a poem is.
