History of the collection

The ram was recovered off Athlit in 1980. Because no oared warship hull survives anywhere, the timbers preserved inside the bronze are among the best evidence for how such ships were built.

Collection notes

The ram allows the displacement and construction of the vessel that carried it to be estimated, which is why a single object can constrain reconstructions of an entire ship class.
